Repeal the Death Penalty? A Public Radio Town Hall
This November, California voters will decide whether to continue practicing capital punishment. Two death penalty–related propositions will appear on the November ballot. Proposition 62 would repeal the state death penalty and replace the maximum punishment for murder with life in prison without possibility of parole. Proposition 66, also known to supporters as the "Death Penalty Reform and Savings" initiative, would challenge death penalty convictions and sentences by changing the procedures governing California’s court appeals and petitions. California is one of 31 states that allow the death penalty, but it hasn't executed an inmate since January 2006. Prior to that, it executed 13 people since it was enacted in 1978.
Where do you stand on the death penalty? What questions do you have before you head to the polls? Join KPBS’s Maureen Cavanaugh, KPCC’s Larry Mantle and a panel of experts as we explore the arguments for and against repealing the death penalty. We'll discuss what the California justice system would look like without it and how the current legislation might be reformed to continue practicing it in California. In the Peace and Justice Theatre.
