El Cuervo Adobe History Hike
4200 Sorrento Valley Boulevard, Sorrento Valley
Cost: Free
Hike out into the west end of Peñasquitos Canyon for a close-up look at the ruins of the adobe built by Diego Alvarado, the compadre of Presidio commadante Francisco Ruíz, who gave him his Peñasquitos land grant.
Learn how adobe bricks were made and the architecture of Spanish and Mexican period haciendas. Examine Norwood Brown’s -- the last of a long line of Peñasquitos cattleman -- old roundup corral and discuss the impact of cattle grazing on native vegetation and adobe structures. Meet at the parking lot at 4200 Sorrento Valley Boulevard.
