Braiding Bad: The Politics of Hair
Sisterlocks, 2043 El Cajon Boulevard, North Park
Age Limit: 18+
Cost: Free
Natural hair care for African-textured hair doesn't use heat or chemicals, yet many states require practitioners to spend thousands of hours on training for impertinent skills. Up until 1999 California was one of those states. During that year, Dr. JoAnne Cornwell successfully challenged those regulations with the help of Institute for Justice.
Join Dr. Cornwell at the SisterLocks headquarters in this session as she goes over the cultural significance of hair braiding and the precedence that her landmark court case has set. Dr. Joanne Cornwell is a Professor Emerita of Africana Studies and French at San Diego State University. She is also a third generation entrepreneur and beauty specialist.
