Defiant Requiem
The San Diego Center for Jewish Culture in partnership with the Anti-Defamation League presents the documentary Defiant Requiem at the David & Dorothea Garfield Theater.
When it comes to Holocaust documentaries, some people think they have heard it all. But until you have heard the music made by the survivors at Terezin, you haven’t heard a thing. The unyielding power of music (in this case, Verdi’s “Messa de Requiem”) gave a group of Jewish prisoners the strength to go on. Memorizing it from a single score and performing it as a chorus 16 times during their internment, the requiem gave the prisoners a tool for defiance and a reason to persevere.
The program includes a discussion with maestro Murry Sidlin, president and founder of The Defiant Requiem Foundation. Info: 858-362-1150 or [email protected].
