Encoded Textiles: Lecture
A Blank(et) Canvas for the Natives of the Americas.
Born in Santiago, Chile, artist Guillermo Bert spent his formative years there during the turmoil of the military coup d'etat. These early experiences influenced the political and social themes in his work.
His current project, Encoded Textiles, weaves together the stories of indigenous people. Illustrating the effects of globalization and its impact on endangered cultures, this multi-faceted project utilizes bar-code technology and documentary video to showcase the narratives of his subjects.
Internationally shown, Bert's work in is in the collections of several notable institutions. Regionally, he has participated in exhibitions at The Pasadena Museum of California Art, Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA), The Museum of Tolerance, Architectural Design Museum, Los Angeles, and here at The San Diego Museum of Art.
