Surfing Madonna
The splat, splat, splat of running shoes on the low tide sand can be heard this Saturday on Moonlight Beach. The runners will be competing in the Surfing Madonna Save the Ocean 5K/10K beach run/walk, touted as one of San Diego’s best races last year. $22,000 in prize money will be divided among the top five male and female runners in both the 5K & 10K Divisions, Team Division, Costume Division, and the Pro Beach Volleyball Tournament.
All entrants receive a shirt, a Surfing Madonna medal, free race photos, and a raffle entry. For those needing to limber up, there will be a Zumba warm-up before the race and a yoga cool-down afterward.
This year, the race has partnered with the City of Encinitas Moonlight Beach Fest, where you can explore the Science of Surf and Skate interactive labs or check out the live music, a sandcastle arena and live art, a “just for kids” zone with free arts and crafts. The pro beach volleyball tournament will host 40 professional teams.
There will also be a classic woodie car show in cul-de-sac “C” above Moonlight Beach. The Waterman Lifestyle Expo, from 9 a.m.–6 p.m., will feature water-sport exhibits and representatives from the Encinitas lifeguards and San Diego County Sheriffs. Another attraction will be the landing and takeoff of the sheriff’s ASTREA helicopter.
Cost is $5 to $54 for the various race and costume divisions. There is no charge for spectators.
$22,000 in prize money is up for grabs this year. Race begins at 2pm low tide; activities begin at 9am. Promo code: SDREADER for 15% off. Info: 760-846-5721
