"Monuments Men and the Curious Case of History’s Most Notorious Art Forger"
The Monuments Men were a group of 350 men and women from 13 nations who volunteered for service to protect monuments and other cultural treasures from the destruction of World War II.
During this lecture, Michael Brown, Ph.D., Associate Curator of European Art, will look at their role in apprehending Hans van Meegeren, who sold a fake Vermeer to the Nazis, and explore the little-known connections between the Monuments Men and The San Diego Museum of Art, which has two authentic paintings rescued during this effort in its Permanent Collection.
