Sonam "Sam" Vorachack fled Laos in 1975 as Communist-led forces engulfed both Laos and Cambodia, slaughtering and/or imprisoning millions.
At the "History Alive" lecture series, sponsored by the Lemon Grove Historical Society, Vorachack will relate the story of his desperate escape, survival in a teeming refugee camp, journey to San Francisco and to San Diego, and successful efforts to become an English-speaking American.
Vorachack recently retired after 30 years with the San Diego Police Department as a cultural liaison and teacher.
