Axline Lecture: Alfredo Jaar
The San Diego Museum of Art and MCASD present the 14th annual Axline Lecture featuring Chilean-born artist Alfredo Jaar. Jaar is an artist, architect, and filmmaker whose work has been shown extensively around the world. "Muxima," a looping video installation featuring multiple iterations of a popular Angolan folk song, currently on view at the museum.
Often questioning art's ability to fully translate the experience of extreme struggle, labor, and suffering, Jaar responds to real life events around the world in the form of photographs, videos, public signage, and installations. He recently represented Chile at the 55th Venice Biennale, has received both a Guggenheim (1985) and MacArthur Fellowship (2000), and has work in the collection of MCASD, among other institutions.
The Axline Lecture honors Jackie and Rea Axline, whose generosity and philanthropic leadership provided endowments to The San Diego Museum of Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in 1999.
