San Diego Music Thing
An annual 2-day music and media conference, the 2013 San Diego Music Thing will take place Friday and Saturday, September 13 and 14 at the Sheraton Hotel, Mission Valley and various venues around San Diego.
Registrants have the opportunity to improve their knowledge of the music business through interactive and roundtable sessions with nationally-known panelists and featured speakers who represent the best and most innovative aspects of the music business. Day time activities include a trade show, happy hour parties, listening stations and pop up live performances as well as a chance to meet and mingle with top industry professionals and artists. Evening activities include the Music Fest, with over 150 local, regional and national bands performing at venues around San Diego.
The San Diego Music Thing will host many acts including reunited 1990s band Medicine, which will be releasing a new album in August. Sonic Youth co-founder Kim Gordon’s new project with free-noise guitarist Bill Nace is called Body/Head and they will be performing at the conference. Other media darling bands scheduled to appear include New York-based Fat Possum recording artists Caveman, Virginia band Wild Nothing, and New York’s Ra Ra Riot.
One man show Brooklyn-based Travis Egedy who is known as Pictureplane was recently lauded for his live show. Los Angeles punk band FIDLAR (the name stands for f**k it dog, life’s a risk) features guitarist Elvis and his brother Max on drums. The siblings are the offspring of T.S.O.L. keyboardist Greg Kuehn. Other notable acts added to the evening showcases include Beat Club, Bleeding Rainbow, In the Valley Below, Leftover Cuties, the Album Leaf, the Features, Tommy and the High Pilots, and Wardell.
Badge holders will have access to all daytime events at the conference’s host hotel, the Sheraton Mission Valley, as well as to the evening music showcases. The day schedule includes featured speakers presentations, panels, mentoring and interactive sessions as well as the Instrument Petting Zoo where attendees can play with various manufacturers’ gear. Super badge holders will also have access to daytime pop up live performances and artist sessions with Lol Tolhurst (the Cure) and Scott Page (Pink Floyd) and other artists to be announced, as well as marquee nighttime showcases.
This year’s featured speakers include Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth) and Mike Herrera (MxPx).
The San Diego Music Thing is produced by the San Diego Music Foundation and proceeds benefit the Foundation’s experiential music programs in 65 schools around San Diego County.
