Mainly Mozart - Mozart & the Mind

10620 John Jay Hopkins Drive, San Diego, 92121
Cost: Free - $55

San Diego’s Mainly Mozart festival (Southern California’s largest classical music summer festival) opens its 25th anniversary season (May 10 – June 22) on May 10, 2013 with an exciting, original series combining music, science and audience interaction in an exploration towards better understanding the relationship between music and the brain.

Led by University of California San Diego researcher Tim Mullen, the new series Mozart & the Mind takes place May 10 – June 1 (six events, Fridays and Saturdays) at the Auditorium at TSRI and includes presentations by leading scientists and musicians on a variety of topics, including the role of music in therapy and rehabilitation, and in improving focus and treating attention disorders; how advances in cognitive neuroscience and neurotechnology create new possibilities for musical expression; how aging impacts hearing, memory and brain function; and the power of music to heal and to transform lives, reinforced with live music and interactive demonstration.

An interactive "Brain-Music Exposition" actively invites audience, scientist and artist communication around a series of exhibits and installations exploring brain-music connections. Among the various exhibitions will be the opportunity for audience members to don state-of-the-art wearable neurotechnology and explore 3-D models of their own brain activity and use their thoughts and feelings to create music. Attendees will walk away not only having heard incredible performances, but will have learned something they can apply to everyday life.

Top musicians - pianist Anne-Marie McDermott, Stephen Prutsman and Anna Polonsky, The St. Lawrence String Quartet, violinist Bella Hristova, violist Che-Yen Chen, cellist Ronald Thomas, clarinetist Jose Franch-Ballester, and horn player Julie Landsman all perform in the Spotlight –Festival concerts paired with the MATM series.
