Discussion of The Hare With Amber Eyes: A Hidden Inheritance, by Edmund de Waal, in conjunction with Art of East Asia and Masterworks in Metal, Ink, and Silk. Summary: The Ephrussis were a grand banking family who "burned like a comet" in 19th-century Paris and Vienna society. They were as rich and respected as the Rothschilds. Yet by the end of World War II, the only thing remaining of their vast empire was a collection of 264 wood and ivory carvings, none of them larger than a matchbox. A docent-led tour of the new Asian galleries follows the book club meeting.
