Dr. Matthew T. Herbst, of UCSD discusses the evolution of Istanbul (formerly Constantinople), from an ancient Greek city, to a Roman/Byzantine imperial center, to an Ottoman capital, to today's thriving Turkish metropolis. This lecture offers a big picture consideration of the site and focuses particularly on the city's role as a center of wealth, power, and diversity in the classical age of the Ottoman Empire (i.e., the 15th-17th centuries).
