Singer Matt Billings founded Mothlight in 2007 while studying film in college in Santa Barbara, where he began working with his friend Andrew Naeve (now of White Arrows) out of their bedrooms. He released 2 EPs: Dust Clouds (2008) and Skin Graft (2010). In 2012 he relocated to San Diego and released the American Spirit EP while working with Ryan Solomon (of Dudes). After the release, he enlisted his college friend Grant Stevens to join the live line-up for Mothlight shows.
Enlisting Odie O'Connor (formerly of Chairs Missing) on drums, they recorded a full-length LP with Garrett Prange (of Cuckoo Chaos) and continued their relationship with Andrew Naeve for mixing.
The band relocated to Los Angeles in 2013.
