Background:
Jay Alexander was born and raised in the early 1970s ghetto-impoverished Westside streets of Chicago. Now based in Ocean Beach, his debut full-length studio album Substance Abuse was released in 2009. Among the performers he’s shared a stage with are Georgia Peach, Avon, Von, Reggie Gibson, the Last Poets, Amiri Baraka, Sonia Sanchez, Roy Ayers, Jon Goode, and Black Ice.
Asked when he began writing poems, Alexander says “I just call them letters since forever.”
