Background:

The Free*Stars were founded by one-time KCR DJs Rafter Roberts and music journalist Dave Stampone (aka D*Star, aka DJ David R). Other core members have included Jim Garry (former KCR Music Director, filmmaker) and Jay F. Hough (former KSDT DJ and GoGoGo AirHeart drummer), and at various times members of the Album Leaf, Castanets, Kill Me Tomorrow, Rocket From the Crypt, Soul-Junk, and Trumans Water.

The band has a song about Reader music writer Ken Leighton called “Ride of the Ink Stained Weasel.”
