Blacktop Royalty was founded by Scott Middough (lead vocals, keyboard, guitar) and Dave Saunders (drums) while both were attending California State University San Marcos. The duo next recruited Jason Brady (guitar, keyboard, backing vocals) and Jake Matthiesen (bass guitar).
After Michael Greenlese was added as a guitar player and backup vocalist in early 2013, they released their Kickstarter-funded full-length Heart's Still at Home, recorded at Voltage Productions in Temecula and produced, engineered, and mixed by Tim Iler.
