57 minutes ago my friend Jan posted a photo on facebook of her husband, his mother, and her mother in law. In Marrakech, with their voting stubs. Momentous occasion. I met Jan two months ago at an art retreat in San Miguel de Allende. She is a writer and photographer, an interesting woman. The second or third night we chatted over a margarita, and found our Morocco connection. Portland Jan met her husband in Marrakech, where he managed an Internet cafe, 7 or 8 years ago when she went on a photographic safari/tour. They eventually married and he moved to the states, went to school, got his education, then the economy took a dive. He also had to deal with US culture. Kissing, hugging, affectionate hugs is a common part of family life in the village. Not so with strangers in the states, even giving a high 5 to a 6 year old can create issues with strangers. He returned to Morocco because there was no way for him to survive culturally or literally in the states. They are friends now, his family her family, Moroccans are like that, generous. And now a vote towards democracy. The world is changing, some things are left behind to make room for new things. In shallah. Oh, and I'm going to see Bob Marley's boy at Whole Foods in an hour or so. Sun is out and I'm going to have a good day. Hope you do too.
