Not Your Typical Type

Typography artists use simple symbols to create expressive and sometimes intricate works of art. Typography can include graphic design made on a computer to graffiti painted on the urban streets. Thumbprint Gallery will be showcasing typography art at its upcoming show titled “Not Your Typical Type: A Typography Art Show” at BASIC on Tuesday January 29.

One of the artists displaying is Persue who is a mixed-style artist that has helped create several action sports logos. Persue’s imaginative and fun graffiti works can be seen all over San Diego. He got his start in skateboarding and snowboarding graphics, and has produced designs on T-shirts and shoes. His most prominent and well-known character is called Bunny Kitty.

Neko, another of the artists headlining the show, has a very distinctive style, which is highly influenced by graffiti and collage. Neko is a local San Diegan with a passion for woodworking. Neko’s painting depict stylized figures composed of vivid colors and varying textures. Another element clearly visible in his work is how he uses of intricate patterns in a varying ways.

Many other local artists displaying artwork in “Not Your Typical Type” will include Mickey Son, SOPHINIE, Alli Bautista, ETAH, Iriko Gunabe, Thomas Bailey, SPIC, Rejeena Victoriano. Additionally, VIXEN will be presenting a pop-up shop boutique along with a runway fashion show. There will also be live painting by True Delorenzo, David Goff and Sharif I. Carter, while local DJs, JoeMama, Pokkey and Skullcrusher will be providing the soundtrack for the evening.

The opening starts at 7pm and runs until 12am on Tuesday January 29. Bar Basic is located at 410 Tenth Avenue in downtown, San Diego. There is no dress code and no cover. However, you must be at least 21 years old to attend.
