Normal Heights gallery ArtLab celebrates the sweet leaf

Willie Nelson once said:

“Federal and state laws (should) be changed to no longer make it a crime to possess marijuana for private use.”

Just kidding.

That was Richard Nixon.

Seriously. The 37th president of the United States of America, Richard Milhous Nixon, was rooting for the decriminalization of marijuana four decades ago.

His administration then, paradoxically, kicked off the oafish, trillion-dollar failfest known as the “War on Drugs” and, in 1973, created the DEA. But the sentiment was there, right?

Nixon also uttered enlightened musings such as:

"Our youth cannot understand why society chooses to criminalize a behavior with so little visible ill effect or adverse social impact... These young people have jumped the fence and found no cliff. And the disrespect for the possession laws fosters a disrespect for laws and the system in general... On top of this is the distinct impression among the youth that some police may use the marihuana laws to arrest people they don't like for other reasons, whether it be their politics, their hair style or their ethnic background."

Who knew the guy was so… in touch?

It’s all spilt bong water under the bridge now, however, as green-friendly states such as Colorado and Washington find their footing with the legalization of personal possession by conducting funny experiments involving cute stoner chics, giant bubblers, and police supervision:
