Ashtanga Series One

When I began practicing yoga over a year ago, I started out with two seventy-five minute classes per week. I increased it to three classes soon after, practicing consistently for many months. It wasn't until recently that I felt I needed more of a challenge, and increased my yoga regimen to four classes--which totals about seven hours of yoga per week.

I would call myself an intermediate practitioner, only, if you look at the first series of ashtanga, I'm still a beginner who struggles mainly with inversions without support.

And then see series two! How can one advance if the yoga studios are sticking to the seventy-five minute routine?

This is where Ashtanga Yoga Center (1905 Calle Barcelona Suite #218) comes in. Ashtanga Yoga Center's baseline is the ninety minute class. The introductory class focuses on basic postures and breathing; it's a clipped version of the full primary series. Here's what I've been looking for: Ashtanga Prep-level 2 and an Intro to First Series-level 2/3. Once you've mastered the asanas or poses and are able to move through the entire first series at one breath per movement, you're ready for First Series-level 3, a two-hour class. Classes cost $18.

I have my work cut out for me. Stay tuned for yoga updates as I increase my regimen.
