Spokesperson for San Diego's Lifeguard Union files run for District 2 council seat

Ed Harris filed papers on July 3.

Longtime lifeguard, Ed Harris, has officially jumped in the race for District 2 city councilmember.

Harris, a spokesperson for the local Lifeguard Union, filed the papers necessary to kick off his candidacy with the City Clerk on July 3. The filing should come as no surprise. The former lifeguard has been stating his intention to run for months. Back in May, Harris came to the rescue of his fellow lifeguards in the comment section of an article in the UT San Diego entitled, "Lookout: lifeguards with six-figure pay."

"San Diego Lifeguards perform 4000-6000 water rescues per year," wrote Harris. "We also make approximately 60 cliff rescues and thousands of medical aides. We operate a wide variety of vessels, conduct dive recovery, river rescue and marine fire fighting. Permanent Lifeguards are peace officers that enforce state and local laws."

Harris signed the comment, "Lifeguard Spokesperson and Candidate for City Council District Two."

Harris will be up against District 6 councilmember Lorie Zapf who had to switch districts after San Diego's district lines were redrawn last year.

The race between the conservative, pro-business and development candidate Zapf and a pro-union candidate in Harris will prove to be an important and hotly contested race.
