Backing a loser

Rancho Santa Fe resident Robert Shillman's $25,000 fails to elect Tea Party conservative

What's $25,000 to a multi-millionaire? You can ask Rancho Santa Fe resident Robert Shillman, who just lost the $25,000 he gave to help elect Florida's Tea-Party congressman Allen West.

Today, a judge in Florida denied West a recount of the votes in his election loss to democrat Patrick Murphy in Florida.

Shillman, Chairman of Cognex Corporation, was one of 10 people to donate to the pro-West PAC, Treasure Coast Jobs Coalition. Those eleven individuals combined threw a total of $2,157,000 to outside committee.

Other donors to the committee included Texas casino mogul Sheldon Adelson and his wife Miriam who gave Treasure Coast Jobs Coalition $1 million; CEO of the United Research laboratory Dr. Richard Roberts who gave the pro-West PAC a cool million, and Herbert Siegel, television mogul and his wife Joanne who threw in $100,000.

West's loss, despite a huge cash advantage over his 29 year-old democratic opponent, is another example of the lack of impact that Citizens United had on the election.

But West isn't giving up on his fight. In a statement to Fox News, West said that he continues to have concerns that "the voters...will not be able to have confidence in the integrity of the electoral process and their right to a fair election, and will continue to pursue all legal options to ensure they do."
