The U.S. Federal Election Commission, which enforces federal campaign finance laws, has told Democratic congressman and San Diego mayoral candidate Bob Filner that he can't fold his congressional campaign committee until "problems" are resolved regarding information contained in previous filings.

"Preliminary review of reports filed during the 2012 election cycle identified problems concerning certain information disclosed by your committee," wrote Bradley Matheson, an FEC senior campaign finance analyst, to Novato-based Nancy Warren, treasurer for the Bob Filner for Congress committee.

"Your committee must continue to file all required reports with the Commission while a determination is being made on whether to pursue these matters any further.

"The Commission will notify you when your request to terminate has been approved and the committee is no longer required to file reports with the Commission."

The letter, dated April 26, sets a May 31 deadline for a response from the commmittee.

"Failure to adequately respond by the response date noted above could result in an audit or enforcement action."

Filner's previous treasurer, Los Angeles-based Kinde Durkee, who specialized in handling the campaign finance accounts of prominent California Democratics, pled guilty in March to embezzling more than $7 million in political money from the campaign funds of at least 50 of her clients.

The letter does not say whether the current FEC investigation is related to the Durkee case.

As reported here last October, the Filner for Mayor 2012 committee was the source of $4500 to Filner's congressional committee on July 26, 2011.

That payment was a "reimbursement of deposit for fundraising event," according to the congressional committee's disclosure filed with the FEC.
