DeMaio To Hold Campaign Event at Headlinerz Barber Shop In North Park

"If my ass was on fire, I wouldn't care who put it out. I have to fight just like all other small business owners who can't get any help from the City." That's Milton, owner of Headlinerz barber shop on El Cajon Boulevard, talking about what he is looking for in a mayoral candidate.

Milton — who opened his business in 2005-- says the next mayor should be supportive of small business owners in all parts of the City, not just downtown interests.

And now, four months from the general election candidates Carl DeMaio and Bob Filner are touring the city hoping to find votes.

Tomorrow at 1:00pm Milton, dozens of loyal patrons, and campaign staff for Carl DeMaio will pack Headlinerz Barber Shop, located in the back office of a tattered strip-mall on the corner of Utah Street and El Cajon Boulevard, to hear DeMaio talk about how he plans, according to the flyer, to "fix" San Diego.

Milton says one of his regulars, Marcus Shannon, who works for the DeMaio campaign arranged the event.

"This is not an endorsement," says Milton as he shaves the head of an middle-aged African-American man that he calls "Unc."

"I'm giving both candidates an opportunity to come and speak. I want to see what they can do for small business owners like myself who would like to see more in terms of community development. I'm not trying to get anything for free. I'm just trying to build a business, just trying to eat."

The fact that DeMaio is a wealthy councilmember from a wealthy district doesn't bother Milton. "I want to hear him say, yeah, I represent Rancho Bernardo but if I am elected I will represent everyone in all areas, to spread his focus on all communities. My intentions in all of this is to bring everyone in the neighborhood together and let him know our needs."

Milton says he is open to having Bob Filner's campaign put on a similar event as a way to get more community members involved.
