Democratic state senator Juan Vargas, running against ex–state senator Denise Ducheny to replace Bob Filner in Congress, has continued to collect big money in its 2010 state campaign account, Juan Vargas for Senate 2010, a recent filing with the California Secretary of State's office shows.

During the year ending December 2011, the former state assemblyman and insurance-company lawyer raised a total of $165,955.84, $34,050 of it in the last six months of the year.

The fund spent $533,979.68, leaving it with a year-end cash balance of $9,707.99.

The list of donors who made contributions to the Vargas committee during the second half of the year is a roster of labor unions and corporations with an interest in California legislative business, including the California Professional Firefighters ($2000); labor's Committee on Political Education ($2500); eBay, Inc.($2000); the Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians ($7800); United Airlines, Inc. ($1000); KPMG, LLP ($1000); Ernst & Young, LLP PAC ($1000); and Anthem Blue Cross ($1900).

But the Vargas committee was still left with outstanding debts of $375,784.66.

Much of the money was owed to consultants, according to the report.

The top creditor is listed as Shallman Communications of Encino, owed $125,000.

(According to a June 2010 acount in the Los Angles Wave, the company sued L.A. city councilman Bernard Parks for nearly $150,000 that Parks allegedly owed the consultant.)

Other creditors of the Vargas campaign, the statement says, included George M. Bresnahan, who received $25,000 but was still owed $100,000; Vargas staff chief Jim Anderson, who was owed $56,000; and Eduardo H. Garcia, Jr. of Coachella, who was owed $25,000.

Besides being district liaison for Vargas, Garcia is also the mayor of Coachella.
