The San Diego Sheriff’s Department kept busy over the weekend by posting various checkpoints around the county, with “DUI/Driver License checkpoints” in Imperial Beach, Poway, San Marcos, and Vista. Another roadblock identified solely as a “DUI checkpoint” was erected in Santee, and Vista deputies did double duty by holding a “Driver Safety Checkpoint” in the Vista courthouse parking lot last Wednesday. All this activity was combined with a DUI warrant sweep in East County on Saturday.

The sweep involved deputies visiting 50 residences in San Diego, El Cajon, La Mesa, Santee, and other eastern portions of the county, where they arrested 8 suspects on 9 total warrants.

Vista deputies, meanwhile, stopped every vehicle entering the courthouse on Wednesday, contacting more than 300 drivers and referring those deemed to be violators to a secondary area. The action resulted in 22 arrests for violations such as driving on a suspended license or allowing someone without a license to drive, which led to the impounding of 21 vehicles.

At the five checkpoints, a total of 7,647 drivers were delayed, though not all were questioned. 27 drivers were given field sobriety tests, with 13 of those individuals arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence.

Drunk drivers, as usual, were only the tip of the iceberg when considering the total haul from the checkpoints. 90 other individuals were cited for various violations, and 40 vehicles, including those of the drivers arrested for DUI, were impounded.
