Comment Period Extended for Expansion of Navy SEAL Training Facilities

The public comment period on an environmental impact statement for the Navy’s Coronado Coastal Campus, which actually consists of eight individual sites throughout the county, has been extended 15 days through August 14, according to an entry in last week’s Federal Register.

According to the Navy, the campus would “support the skills and knowledge required by [Naval Special Warfare Command, or SEAL] personnel within a college campus-like setting and would include a mix of facilities to develop proficiency in equipment maintenance and use, classroom and tactical training instruction, and equipment storage.”

The Navy’s Coronado base actually comprises a grouping of eight facilities spread throughout the county, which serve to provide training grounds and support services for active troops.

Justification for expansion was provided to attendees of previous meetings hosted by the Navy to inform local residents as to their intent. Naval officials said existing space for the Command dated back to the era of World War II and was too small and scattered, as well as functionally obsolescent.

A total of 25 individual projects are planned over the coming years, which would be located on existing Navy property at Naval Air Station North Island on Coronado, Silver Strand Training Complexes North and South, and at Naval Outlying Landing Field Imperial Beach. Proposed alternatives range from no improvements being made at all to centralization of Command operations at Silver Strand South.

Further information on the proposal and possible alternatives is available here.
