“Were are a group of women who love Occupy and we’re bringing our message to the people,” says Kristen Smith, 47. “We want to meet people who would not necessarily go to the Civic Center, but who are still interested in what Occupy is all about.”

As such, at least a dozen San Diego area women will take the message of support for the Occupy movement to shoppers at Mission Valley mall at 2 pm tomorrow.

The all-volunteer group Women Occupy San Diego will sing altered holiday carols and answer questions shoppers may have about the reasons for supporting the goals of the Occupy movement. They will begin on the north side of the mall near Nordstrom Rack.

“We’ll be singing ‘Occu-carols’ from ‘Deck the Halls’ to ‘Santa Claus is Coming to Town’ with an Occupy message,” says Smith.

The group of mostly middle-aged women got together at Horton Plaza recently to help further awareness of the movement’s message of social and economic justice.

“We had about a dozen last week at Horton Plaza,” says Smith. “It was a pretty big hit. We had people going about their business and we had positive reactions. No negative reactions at all. I think the true meaning of the holiday season is about love and care of our fellow humans and that’s what Occupy is all about. Inequality has gotten too extreme. It’s starting to hit a critical mass for a lot of people. I feel like our voices aren’t being listened to. The one percent, money, and lobbyists are drowning out all of us. If we could get corporate money out of politics, we will get the peoples’ say back into America.”

In the spirit of bolstering local business, Smith adds, “In an ideal economy, the money we spend on gifts would be sent back to the community. We wish all the shopping money wasn’t siphoned out of our community. If people ask, we can give them a lot of suggestions on where to shop locally.”
