Week 8 High Five

Game of the Week

Vista (3-3, 0-1 Palomar) at Poway (3-3, 1-0) Friday 7 p.m.

Division I is wide open this season, and these are two teams that figure to be around in late November. Expect both teams to run the ball – the Titans and Panthers both average more than 40 rushes a game. While the Titans ride running back Nick Ricciardulli (938 yards and nine touchdowns), the Panthers’ ground attack relies on quarterback David Fisher and back Jordan Alexander (786 yards). Both teams need to win to avoid falling too far behind Carlsbad, who has started off 2-0 in the Palomar League.

Best of the Rest

Santa Fe Christian (4-2, 0-0 Coastal) vs Christian (7-0, 1-0) at Valhalla HS Saturday 7 p.m.

The Patriots have rolled to an unbeaten start, beating their opponents by an average of 41 points. But starting with their game against the Eagles, Christian begins their toughest three-game stretch of the regular season. So far no team has been able to stop Patriots running back, who has 1232 yards and 14 touchdowns. Last year Christian beat Santa Fe Christian 30-6.

Cathedral Catholic (6-0, 1-0 Eastern) at Mira Mesa (4-2, 1-0) Friday 6:30 p.m.

The Dons have looked unbeatable so far behind the running of Tyler Gaffney. But the Marauders have played one of the toughest schedules in the county and won’t be afraid of a big game. Last season, the Dons beat the Marauders by seven, 42-35.

Bonita Vista (5-1, 0-1 Mesa) vs Chula Vista (4-2, 1-0) at Southwestern College Friday 7:30 p.m.

The Barons will look to bounce back from their first loss of the season. It doesn’t get any easier as they face the Spartans, winners of two straight. Chula Vista quarterback Victor Perez has thrown for 910 yards and eight touchdowns and back Anthony Stanislaus leads the Spartans in rushing. Linebacker Daniel Scanlon leads Bonita Vista’s defense, which is allowing less than 10 points per game.

Fallbrook (3-3, 1-0 Avocado) at Escondido (5-1, 1-0) Friday 7 p.m.

What may not have seemed like headliner a few weeks ago, this Avocado League showdown should be a good one. Fallbrook has won three straight, averaging 26.3 points per game. For the Warriors to have a shot, they will have to contain running back Ricky Seale (1219 yards, six touchdowns) and an Escondido offense that is averaging 46 points per game.
