Week 11 High Five

Game of the Week

Eastlake (7-2, 4-0 Mesa) at Chula Vista (7-2, 4-0) Friday 7 p.m.

The Spartans first home game of the season just happens to be their most important – a clash against the Titans that will determine who wins the Mesa League. Chula Vista has not played a home game this season because their stands required renovation. Neither team has lost since September – Eastlake has won five straight and Chula Vista has won six in a row. The Titans are led by two-way star Tony Jefferson, who leads the team with 855 yards rushing and 17 touchdowns. The Spartans are allowing only 11 points per game in league play. Eastlake has won three of the last four meetings.

Best of the Rest

Christian (9-0, 3-0 Coastal) at Francis Parker (8-1, 3-0) Friday 7 p.m.

This winner of this battle for the Coastal League title could also determine who gets the No. 1 seed in the Division V playoffs. The Patriots have won their games by an average of 26 points and their offense relies on the running of back Richard Thompson, who averages 173 yards and has 17 touchdowns on the ground. Christian’s defense will have to contain Francis Parker quarterback Deon Randall, who has 1,210 yards passing and 14 touchdowns, and also leads the Lancers with 998 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns. These two teams have also met in the playoffs each of the last three years.

Cathedral Catholic (9-0, 4-0 Eastern) at Scripps Ranch (7-2, 3-1) Friday 6:30 p.m.

It appeared the Dons had already passed their biggest obstacle to an unbeaten regular season. But the Falcons can play defense – at least for one week, as they held Mira Mesa to 21 last week. That defense coupled with an offense averaging 39 points per game could be the right combination to end Cathedral Catholic’s bid for perfection. Both teams are led by their offensive stars – Catherdral Catholic running back Tyler Gaffney and Scripps Ranch quarterback Tate Forcier. The Dons won last year’s meeting 49-25.

Oceanside (9-0, 5-0 Valley) at Ramona (8-1, 4-1) Friday 7:30 p.m.

The Pirates passed the first of their two-game Valley League test with a 49-21 win over Valley Center on Friday. Now the defending state champs take the long trip east – 40 miles to be exact – to face the one-loss Bulldogs. Since an 18-point win over Mira Mesa on Sept. 19, Oceanside has not won by less than 28 points. Pirates quarterback Jordan Wynn has thrown for 2,164 yards and 23 touchdowns this year. Ramona’s usually stout defense gave up 30 points last week in a win over Westview, and the Bulldogs will need to tighten things up to have a shot at beating the Pirates. Oceanside has won 21 in a row dating back to last season.

Foothills Christian (8-1, 6-0 Southern) vs Calvin Christian (8-0, 6-0) at Seau Park Friday 7 p.m.

If Christian and Francis Parker are one and two in Division V, this is the battle for No. 3. Both teams have survived the Southern League unbeaten to this point, the largest league in the section. The unbeaten Crusaders have allowed only 11 points per game this season. The Knights are led by dual threat quarterback Garret Campbell, who has thrown for 1,224 yards and 16 touchdowns and run for another 841 yards and 11 touchdowns. Last season these teams split their two meetings, with each team winning on the road.

Other Games in the Red Zone

Madison (9-0, 5-0 Central) at Kearny (5-4, 3-2) Friday 2:30 p.m.
