Padres beat the Dodgers 7-5 in Cactus League play

In their first meeting in the Cactus League in 2013, Padres beat their division rivals

Zack Greinke didn't look much better than Freddy Garcia on the mound on Friday afternoon, and the Padres took care of the Dodgers 7-5. The game was very much back-and-forth until the Padres put a lid on it in the final inning.

The Padres got on the board first when Everth Cabrera and then Chris Denorfia hit back-to-back doubles and Cabrera crossed home. The Padres led 1-0 before the Dodgers came up to bat.

In the second inning, Freddy Garcia got carried away. After hitting former Padre Adrian Gonzalez with a pitch, he walked former Padre Jerry Hairston (see a trend here?) and then allowed a single to Mark Ellis which scored Gonzalez.

Hairston was thrown out on the play, but A.J. Ellis came up and drove Mark home, and the Dodgers took a 2-1 lead. It didn't last long.

In the Padres third inning, Nick Hundley opened with a double and Jonathan Galvez tripled, plating Hundley. The Padres tied the score at two a-piece.

The Dodgers came back in their half of the third inning, when Hanley Ramirez opened with a single and then stole second base. Nick Punto then hit an infield single, putting Ramiriz at third base, and two outs later, Ramirez stole home and the Dodgers were in the lead again.

The fourth inning for the Dodgers yielded another run after A.J. Ellis walked and took second on a sacrifice and then third base on a ground out. Hanley Ramirez then singled, plating Ellis, and the Dodgers were up 4-2.

The Padres pulled closer in the fifth inning. Nick Hundley reached on an error and Jonathan Galvez doubled, putting Hundley at third base. After Everth Cabrera struck out, Chris Denorfia grounded into a fielder's choice with Hundley thrown out at home plate, but Chase Headley then singled home Galvez and the Padres trailed 4-3.

In the top of the fifth inning, the Padres tied it up. Jedd Gyorko doubled to lead off the inning and then Travis Buck drove Gyorko home with a single and the score was tied 4-4.

In the Padres half of the seventh inning, they took the lead after Kyle Blanks doubled and was eventually plated on a sacrifice by Jaff Decker. But the Dodgers came back on that.

In the bottom of the seventh inning against Padres reliever Jason Ray, C.J. Retherford hit a home run and the Dodgers tied the score at 5-5. The Padres waited until the ninth inning to respond.

Zach Lee took the mound for Los Angeles and after Logan Forsythe singled and Gregorio Petit struck out, Alexi Amarista singled, putting Forsythe at third base. Forsythe then scored on a balk by Lee, Amarista taking second base, and an out later, Decker doubled, plating Amarista, and the 7-5 Padres lead held up to the end.

The win puts the Padres at 4-5 in Cactus League play and drops the Dodgers to 3-2 in Arizona.

Notes:

Saturday, the Padres travel to Goodyear to face the Cleveland Indians. Edinson Volquez will get the start for the Friars, going against Ubaldo Jimenez. Game time is at 12:05 PM PST, but apparently radio won't get you there, so tune in via MLB.com and you'll have options there. Tomorrow, we'll launch a call to the Padres radio flagship and find out what in the bloody hell is going on. It demands a righteous explanation, and we're on it.
