SDSU Aztecs beat USD Toreros for 8th straight win

USD is, yet again, no match for cross town rival SDSU

SDSU faced its cross town rival University of San Diego on Saturday night at Viejas Arena and for the 7th straight time, the Aztecs beat the Toreros. The Aztecs won the match 72-56 after leading by as many as 22 points. Coach Fisher spoke with his team before the game about the recent shooting at an elementary school in Newtown, CT and a somber moment of silent was held at the arena before the national anthem. The Aztecs balanced its minutes very throughout the night, having nine players with minutes in double figures. The height advantage for SDSU was very evident, so much so that the USD coach noted afterward that the length bothered them and forced them to rush shots.

Game Notes:

Chase Tapley and Jamaal Franklin both continue to shoot well and lead the Aztecs. Both played 29 minutes, shot an impressive 50% from the 3-point line and were perfect from the free throw line. Tapley finished with 15 points and 2 blocks while Franklin scored 14 points and pulled in 8 rebounds. Tapley also played tremendous defense on USD’s leading scorer, Johnny Dee. He held Dee to 9 points total after a scoreless first half. The Aztecs will go as far as Tapley and Franklin will take them.

SDSU is rolling. This is the Aztecs’ 8th straight win and 28th straight win over teams from CA. Their only loss was to the 3rd ranked team in the nation, Syracuse, on an aircraft carrier. The Aztecs could continue to win until their next big challenge of the season, UNLV, which will be played on Janury 16th at Viejas Arena.

Next up, the Aztecs take on Point Loma Nazarene University, on Tuesday night at Viejas Arena. Tickets are still available.
