Week 4 High Five

Game of the Week

#9 San Pasqual (3-0) at #4 Poway (3-0) Friday 7 p.m.

The weekend’s only matchup of unbeatens takes center stage as the Game of the Week. Poway and San Pasqual sport identical records, but while the Titans were a trendy preseason pick, the Eagles have been more of a surprise just two seasons removed from a winless 2009 campaign. Poway survived a 24-17 scare last week at Lincoln to stay undefeated, and the balanced, talented Titans have lived up to their preseason billing thus far. San Pasqual jumped into the Red Zone rankings this week at No. 9, and the Eagles have allowed an average of eight points per game in wins over Valley Center, Rancho Bernardo, and Mt. Carmel. Offensively, quarterback Tyler Tony and running back Grant Coots lead San Pasqual’s triple option attack that has kept opposing defenses off balance. These two teams met last season, with Poway winning 39-21.

Best of the Rest

#7 Cathedral Catholic (2-1) at Olympian (1-1) Friday 7 p.m.

After losing handily to Helix last week, Cathedral Catholic faces another tough test when they travel to the South Bay to face an Olympian team fresh off an upset of Torrey Pines. Expect defense to dominate this game – Olympian has allowed seven points per game and in its two wins, Cathedral Catholic also allowed a touchdown per game. An enrollment bump moved Olympian to Division III this season, making this game a potential playoff preview.

Granite Hills (3-0) at San Diego (2-1) Friday 6:30 p.m.

Granite Hills is 3-0 for the first time in a long time, off to a fast start for the second season in a row. The Eagles face their toughest test so far when they take on San Diego at Balboa Stadium. The Cavers are a last-second loss to Carlsbad from being undefeated and are wrapping up a three-game homestand. Both defenses will have their hands full with talented quarterbacks Dylan Andrews (Granite Hills) and Khari Kimbrough (San Diego).

Westview (3-0) at Del Norte (2-1) Friday 7 p.m.

Of all the early unbeatens, no team has been more surprising than Westview – or more dominant. The Wolverines have allowed a total of six points in wins over Santa Fe Christian, San Marcos and Rancho Buena Vista, and have won those games by an average of 29 points. In its second year of varsity football Del Norte has already equaled its win total from last season, and the Nighthawks have pitched shutouts in consecutive wins. Who will prevail in this battle of neighbors?

Sun Valley Village Christian (2-1) vs. Bishop’s (2-0) Friday 7 p.m. at La Jolla High

Despite being hit hard by graduation from its undefeated state title team, Bishop’s is off to an undefeated start this season. Led by the senior offensive duo of quarterback Joey Moreno and receiver Dominique Love the Knights have rolled up 85 points in their first two games this year, including 50 at Division III Monte Vista last week. Can Bishop’s stay undefeated when it faces the Crusaders from the Southern Section?

In the Red Zone

Palo Verde Valley (2-0) at Santa Fe Christian (2-1) Saturday 2 p.m.

For the second straight week the Red Zone will be at the Eagles’ Nest, where for the second straight week Santa Fe Christian is hosting an undefeated opponent. Santa Fe Christian has relied on its defense early, a unit that will be tested by a Palo Verde Valley offense averaging 36 points per game. Located in Blythe close to the California-Arizona border, the Yellowjackets are making a 230-mile trip to Solana Beach.
