Truly epic lunch at Felix's BBQ in Lincoln Park

Felix’s BBQ With Soul, original to Oceanside, has a location on Euclid Ave in Lincoln Park. It will be a bit out of the way for some people, but there’s plenty of parking and the lunchtime specials are off the chain. The entire place is welcoming; big, light, spacious, friendly, everything you could want out of a soul food BBQ house.

And, really, like I said, the “lunch box specials” are a show stopper. Served daily until 4:00, each lunch plate is dinner-sized and well under ten bucks served with fries and coleslaw. I tried a plate of St. Louis ribs. The enormous, meat-laden bones threatened to tip my plate. I subbed candied sweet potatoes (my favorite) for the french fries, which netted me a fifty-cent upcharge that I gladly paid.

I also picked at some red beans and rice (delicious!) and sipped a little lemonade and sweet tea, both of which were also delicious. Foolishly, I ordered a rather expensive cup of gumbo ($7.95), not foreseeing the magnitude of the ribs to come. Worth it! Full of shrimp, chicken, sausage, and zesty gravy.

I am hard-pressed to find fault with Felix’s. The service was better than average and the portions on the lunch plates were downright Flintstone-ian. The gumbo should have been five dollars, max, even if it did have a lone, beautiful shrimp nestled on top. I would like to return for dinner sometime, but I don’t think I could eat an entire dinner plate if the lunch specials are any indication. It would be a good place to go with a bigger party, picking at some ‘cue and sweet lemonade.

Or just go back for lunch and maybe get into the sandwiches: catfish, pulled pork, tri-tip. The list goes on.

Next time, Felix. Next time.
