Old Town: Kawsak, the Salsa, Ice Cream…

You want ice cream? You want sunsets? You want to dance the salsa? On dirt, to live Ecuadorian pan flute players?

Old Town, weekend evenings. People come to practice, here in the little plaza near the Seeley stables, outside Old Town Ice Cream and Frozen Yogurt (2611 San Diego Avenue, between Twiggs Street and Mason Street, 619-692-0710).

This is where Kawsak, the Ecuadorian band – actually two guys, Inti and Kuyai - play weekends at sunset with really beautiful guitar work and flute-playing.

“Kawsak” means “Life” in Quechua, the language of the Andes. (That’s what Inti - “Sun” - the guitar player, and Kuyai - “Love” - the pan flute player, tell me.)

I was hurrying to the ice cream place. Joined a line, natch, and when my turn came, asked Adele, the lone server, for the smallest, cheapest dunk you could get.

She gives me the “kidscoop,” a pretty generous li’l pot, actually. I pay $2.89.

I head out to the patio. Sit in one of the bright-colored chairs under this reddish cloth awning, watching the last rays of ol’ Huey shining through the foliage as he heads for Hawaii.

Listen to the dreamy music.

Then as the dusk-light comes, and I’m down to my last scoop, funny thing happens.

Couple of couples head out onto the dirt space and start dancing up a storm to the music. Salsa. The women really fly.

Dang. Makes you long to get up and join in.

That’s it. Carla and I are taking salsa lessons.

Meantime, one more Kidscoop?
