Food Truck Lunch: Sushi Ninjas

I live in an area that draws food trucks by the dozens. The many business parks lining the 805 around UTC and Sorrento Valley, as well as the Metro system’s UCSD bus loop makes it an attractive area for lunchtime patrons. On those days when I don’t have anything in the fridge for lunch, it’s easy to drive down the street and scope out the offerings.

I’ve seen Sushi Ninjas around for a while, and they always have a line of hungry-looking people waiting.

The menu is simple and inexpensive. A couple of mixed plates, the basic five nigiri a la carte, tuna, salmon, shrimp, albacore and red snapper, two pieces for $2.50, $3 for tuna. There are a couple of combos, hand rolls ($3) and several cut rolls ranging from $6 to $9.

The hand and cut rolls have cute names like Jessica Albacore and “Sal” Antro, but I went for a simple combo, five pieces of nigiri and a Cali roll for $7. They were out of soy sauce, so I got ponzu instead. The fish was respectably fresh, and cut ninja thin. For the price I’m not expecting huge portions and the rice ball was also small, so it didn’t overwhelm. It was decent, not amazing, but certainly fine for a quick lunch. The Cali roll was a Cali roll. I’m not too cool to pretend that I don’t enjoy one every so often.

Overall, it was a satisfactory lunch for the money. If I worked at one of the surrounding buildings, I’d be a repeat customer. Depending on the location, there are some nice, smoke free areas to enjoy your meal as well.

Sushi Ninjas also has a good happy hour special. From 4:30-6:00 pm, or till they sell out if that’s sooner, appetizers are BOGO and cut rolls are B2GO. They usually park at Nobel and Regents for HH, but check their website or Facebook page before you head out. During the summer months, they sometimes change it up.
