Elephant and Castle: Beat This View!

Gotta say. This time of a Friday evening, you can't beat the waterfront. Sitting here at sunset waiting for the lovely Carla, at the Elephant and Castle (1355 North Harbor Drive, 619-234-9977).

Sun's setting through the clouds over Point Loma. Behind the foresails of the Star of India.

Oh man. Can't help gettin' romantic here. Just imagine, people sailing into this port back when sails were king. Must've looked a wild and woolly place. 'Course standing on shore were the Kumeyaay, wondering who da heck were these wild and woolly strangers coming in and making like this was their place.

And it all happened exactly here.

Yes, these Deep Thoughts are happening with a help of a Coronado Brewery Islander IPA ($4.50) that the barman Jeffery was kind enough to serve me.

While I was at the bar, couple of gents, Jason and Bernie...

...were chewing down on bar food that I think Carla may go for: Jason's into a really interesting-looking bangers and mash ($12) in a round plate...

...and Bernie's eating what he calls a "Too Much" sandwich. It's a lot alright. It's an E&C club sandwich ($11.50), with turkey and bacon.

Not seeing much about Happy Hour here. Could be wrong. Still, the view's worth it on its own. Plus the big bonus is they have a large French-style patio with cupolas and blue umbrellas shading you, and the water - the water! The edge of the continent! Imagine how our forefathers dreamed of this as they trekked west across the deserts! - shining like a pearl...Hey, told you I was getting all romantic. What are they putting in this brew?

Jeffery says this place is English with a French heart. Seems the originators of this 22-pub, Boston-based chain were French (wife) and English (husband). My one beef: Turns out they do have a happy hour, but mostly it's deals on drinks. Food's just a dollar off. Say, $9 instead of $10.

Still, location3! Cant beat it.

Heck, if the Star of Inja was ready to sail, I'd be signin' on, right now. Dress Carla up as a lady privateer, git myself an eyepatch...Adventure calls!
