You don't have to go to Baltimore to be called "Hon". Our family stopped in at the Daily News Café for a very late breakfast…it was after 1:00. Thankfully, breakfast is served all day. An older blonde woman told us that she’d be right with us and threw in “Honeys” at the end of her welcome. The restaurant, which is often packed on weekend mornings, had thinned out enough for the us stragglers to get a table right away. We had our choice of an indoor or outdoor table. There is really a different feel depending on where you sit. Outdoors, you feel very much that beach town vibe of downtown Carlsbad and it’s fun to watch people walk by. Indoors, it has a much more old-fashioned café feel with older oak tables, floral tablecloths, and vintage items on high-up shelves.

Shannon, AKA Gator, continued to refer to us as Hon or Honey as she took our order, which increased the old-fashioned café sensation. Mark chose the breakfast burrito with red potatoes. ($10.95) Our daughter opted out of breakfast with a PB&J sandwich and french fries, ($4.75) while I went with a favorite of the house: croissant french toast. ($8.95) I also ordered a side of red potatoes ($2.75) and a cup of tea. ($2.40) They offer Numi brand tea, which made me happy because Numi is one of those hyper eco-conscious, Fair Trade companies that I like to support.

When we got our food, I thought the breakfast burrito looked really good. I had to ask Mark what was in it: scrambled eggs, bacon, jack and cheddar cheese, and ranchero sauce. My croissant french toast was liberally sprinkled with powdered sugar and came with a fruit bowl. I asked for honey since the syrup on the table was Log Cabin or some other not-real-maple-syrup syrup. It was satisfying and just a little decadent. The fruit was fresher and riper than it had been on other visits. The red potatoes redeemed themselves as well. Years ago I had them and they were undercooked, which is why I switched to the hash browns. I’m definitely a “once bitten, twice shy” person, but I prefer red potatoes and thought it was time to give them another shot. I’m glad I did. Mark finished off the breakfast burrito, saying that the sauce inside and the salsa on top really made it delicious.
As we walked out, Shannon thanked us and called us “Hon” one more time, for good measure….
