Ed’s Alternative: Locovores in La Jolla

Are there any real cheap eats in La Jolla? Ask Diana Goedhuys.

I was wandering up Girard carrying Carla’s Great Burger Care Package (see Carla's Call), heading for the #30 bus stop on Silverado. And I was jes’ thinking: This has to be the nearest thing to Rodeo Drive we’ve got down here.

Fine, but how could anyone afford to serve up really cheap eats paying the rents they must be paying?

That’s when I came across this sign.

It was sitting in the window of Girard Gourmet (7837 Girard Street, La Jolla).

I turned around to the cute little sidewalk tables and found Beverly and Tyler working their way through plates of spaghetti with the pleasure of their raspberry and blueberry pies still to come (if the sun didn’t melt them first). All for eight bucks and change.

Beverly and Tyler with their eight dollar meals

“We’re always offering little deals like this,” Diana Goedhuys, who runs GG with her husband François, told me.

But she says the best is still to come.

"We have a one-acre garden up in Julian that François tends each week, and we should have an avalanche of fruit come summer.

"We have been composting it for eight years, and now it’s really starting to pay off. We’ll be getting everything from eggplant to eggs to pears to peaches. We have 40 fruit and nut trees. And it will all come down to enter our little food chain here.”
