Baja & Border News Translations: Alarming Increase in Migrant Children; Prostate Cancer Diagnosis

Alarming Increase in Migrant Children (El Sol de Tijuana, 1/4/13 by Victor Martinez Jimenez)

Orizaba, Veracruz - As a result of violence by those who live in their homes, coupled with poverty surrounding them, the flow of migrant children has increased disproportionately during 2012; in many cases the average age now ranges from 11 to 14 years and most travel alone.

Fray Tomás González, responsible for a shelter for migrants in Tenosique, Tabasco argued that the flow of children and adolescents has started to reach worrisome levels. In most cases the young migrant people who pass through are about 17 years old, but also many are as young as 11.

Many who have stayed at the shelter, he explained, have expressed not only are they fleeing poverty and a lack of opportunities in their Central American communities, but also excessive violence experienced at home. Many try to stay at home with grandparents who try to give them an education and solve their primary needs to the extent of their possibilities, but they do not always succeed. Many of these cases, added the Franciscan, come from Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala and Nicaragua.

And like adults, he emphasized, children and migrant teenagers face the same dangers on the migrant path as the victims of violence, insecurity and targets of police abuse. It is estimated Central American migration will not change much with the new PRI Government, because neither of the entities have assumed important roles to curb abuses. Even in Veracruz they only make excuses, because most of the complaints are not taken seriously. http://www.oem.com.mx/elsoldetijuana/notas/n2829527.htm

Prostate Cancer Diagnosis (El Sol de Tijuana, 1/4/13 by Roberto Rondero)

City of Mexico - Among the new goals for the new year, health is ranked in one of the several traditional groups, so nothing is better than toasting than putting action to words for men who are 40 years or older to have their prostate checked. It is the gland located near the bladder and whose diseases can trigger cancer.

In "20 Responses for Prostate Cancer", written by Dr. Dagoberto Molina Polo, with a subspecialty in Urology at the National "20 de Noviembre" Medical Center and an active member of various Urological societies and associations, among them the ABC Medical Center, the Medical Society of the Angeles Group and the Mexican National Council of Urology, discusses what has become the most common cancer in the male population globally and in Mexico, a compelling reason for early detection of the disease.

Unlike women, who have the support of various organized groups to undertake productive and varied health media campaigns to combat breast and cervical cancers and heart disease, men do not have adequate and sustained dissemination and disclosures to help them prevent the early detection of prostate carcinoma coupled with taboos and prejudices. Most of the 'macho' character is riddled with shame and false information that involves anal exams, ultrasounds and prostate-specific antigens.

For Dr. Dagoberto Molina, despite the high incidence of this disease, many cases are not diagnosed in a timely manner "since this type of cancer does not give symptoms in its early stages, even for those patients who are diagnosed in a timely manner. Male capriciousness and heterogeneous behavior generates confusion and controversy regarding the proper approach and handling, depending on the clinical stage."

Among recently published statistics is a study that assesses the medical behavior and survival of 828 patients, which discovered those who had well-differentiated prostate cancer showed an 87% chance of living 10 years. Patients with moderately-differentiated carcinoma had a 58% chance to live that same amount of time and those with little-differentiated cancer, only 26% chance to survive a decade. In such a way, the later the diagnosis, the darker the prognosis. Four factors are associated with the etiology of this disease: genetic predisposition, stimuli and hormonal influence, infectious agents and environmental factors.

One of the most important advances in the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up is the discovery of the prostate-specific antigen as a tumor marker. The Antigen is a glycoprotein produced by the prostate and is secreted in the cytoplasm of cells. Normal values range from zero to 4 ng/ml. "Patients presenting with a prostate Antigen of values greater than 4 ng/ml may have prostate cancer and it is advisable to immediately have a urological consultation", he advises.

Rectal examination can provide information about tumor volume and its location within the prostate. Tumor staging through this method, however, is inaccurate since it depends on the experience of the examining doctor and is subject to serious errors of interpretation. Once the presence of a prostate cancer is suspected, you must arrive at an accurate diagnosis quickly and this is confirmed only by doing a transrectal biopsy of the gland with the help of high definition ultrasound equipment which allows taking between 14 and 16 biopsies in order to perform full-mapping. http://www.oem.com.mx/elsoldetijuana/notas/n2829090.htm
