Who ordered the Godzilla remake?

Godzilla should hop the next junk to Hollywood and help stomp out a few tent poles, not get his own dressing room and starring role in a new one.

Didn't a blockbuster version of Godzilla flop a few years back? Yikes! Has it really been fifteen years since the dismal Matthew Broderick remake was released? It should only be another fifteen years before Hollywood gets a chance to muck up the legacy of this iconic, giant, bipedal mutant dinosaur/metaphor for nuclear annihilation.

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures announced today the principle cast for what must be the bazillionth remake of Godzilla. Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ken Watanabe, Elizabeth Olsen, and Juliette Binoche have signed on to star along with David Strathairn and Bryan Cranston.

Those Kieslowski and Kiarostami snoozers must not have resulted in big paydays for Ms. Binoche. Why else -- other than a house or boat payment -- would an actress with her taste and pedigree agree to appear in an off the rack shmate such as this?

Max Borenstein (Swordswallowers and Thin Men), Frank Darabont (The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, The Shawshank Redemption) and Dave Callaham (The Expendables 1,2,3) have signed on as scriptwriters.

The only ray of hope is Gareth Edwards whose first feature, the low budget alien invasion flick, Monster, managed to smuggle in parallels to topical border issues as prescient as any on display in the countless documentaries I've seen on the subject. Let's hope the giant budget doesn't flatten Edwards like his leading man would a high voltage, power relay station.
