REJECTED — My Failed Entry for the 2011 San Diego 48-Hour Film Project Competition*

Apologies for the late blog-start today - I was recovering from my mad weekend of making my entry for the San Diego 48 Hour Film Project. The rule, as you may have surmised, is that the entire film has to be conceived and executed in a 48-hour period. And the required elements were: a character named Lance or Lara Altman who is also an athlete, a ticket, and the line, "Please keep it to yourself."

Naturally, my film - called, mysteriously, "The Yellow Jersey" - featured a man (me) filling 400 urine sample specimen jars and then trading them to famous bicycle racer Lance Altman for a ticket to see Sheryl Partridge live at the Hollywood Bowl. Altman's parting line is of course, "Please keep it to yourself," but of course, I immediately put the ticket on Craigslist and blab about the whole exchange on Facebook and Twitter. My #dopeydoper hashtag trends like crazy, and Altman is banned from biking. Plus, I get $250 for the ticket!

After that, things get ugly. Let's just say that when Altman starts plotting his revenge, he feels inspired by his own cancer-related orchiectomy. I think our special effects were pretty awesome, given the deadline and the fact that my dog needed the operation anyway. The San Diego ASPCA feels otherwise. Hence, the pre-emptive rejection.

*No, just kidding. I didn't make a movie - it would have interfered with my Sunday nap. But lots of other people did - hopefully, some of them will blog about it here. And if you're curious, you can see the fruit of their labors August 15, 17, and 18 at UltraStar in Hazard Center. Winners in the various categories get screened on August 20, also at UltraStar in Hazard Center. Check the Project website for more details.
