This is a view from the walkway that leads from the parking lot to the summit at the new Double Peak Park in San Marcos which opened on June 19th of 2009. It boasts the largest public open space area in San Marcos and features trail heads that lead off in several directions. At the top, is a lovely playground and picnic area and a breathtaking ampitheater that seems to disappear off the side of the mountain. You will be envious of the view held by the park's caretaker dwelling. On a clear day, which we've had many of this October, you can see all the way to the Pacific Ocean, Mt. Baldy, Mt. San Jacinto and Mt. Palomar. Of course there are always gorgeous views of the San Marcos Valley, Escondido and Carlsbad. At 1,644 feet, Double Peak is the second-highest peak in the Cerro de las Posas mountains of San Marcos. It is second only to San Marcos's own Mt. Whitney, which is not to be confused with Mt. Whitney in Sequoia National Park, that tops out at 1,729. Bring your lunch, your hiking boots and your camera and don't forget your jacket because it can get pretty windy up there.
