Kensington Video is closing!

Matthew your moving and the decrease of visits really resonates with me. I worked down in Mission Valley for a while and it was a quick zip up the 15 to Adams to stop in and grab a video. Then when I changed job locations that all changed. I'd like to try to increase my visits. Now all those silent films I kept passing by (near the rear entrance) are screaming "rent me before the crypt gates close" and so I drove over and rented two today. Streaming video has "so many" choices or so it seems... until you see how many (virtually infinite) choices there are in the Hanford's shop.

This is awful news. I'm glad you're on it Scott because if you say there's no hope and it is for the best, then that will help me accept it. There is a line of thought that if enough new customers can be found then things could stay as they are: http://savekensingtonvideo.blogspot.com/ However I was in Kensington Video today and overheard a guy tell Pam how his wife purchased the entire set of Star Trek the Original Series for big bucks, but now his friend has every episode instantly on streaming Netflix. Yeah but does Netflix have Clara Bow films? Kensington Video certainly does. Thank you for breaking the news.

El Cajon Battles Billboards

The photograph reminds me of a scene in the Christopher Walken film entitled $5 A Day. It's where the two main characters make a "rest stop" beneath a Cadillac billboard. That's beside the point, though. El Cajon, despite being a fine city that has the coolest police website ever, has battled image problems for years. No way they're gonna allow billboards up along the I-8.

Bloodless

Rolling the Stones will actually return to the Dreamcatcher Lounge this Sunday, July 19th, as part of the "UMC Showcase" from 6:00pm to 10:00pm. Admission is free... I think Viejas makes their money selling drinks from the bar at the back of the lounge. Oh yeah, and Monsters of Rock will also be playing that same night, too!!! And another band I don't know too well, 6one9. I'm going... it's like a San Diego treasure... free entertainment at the Dreamcatcher Lounge!

Prohibition

"Yes". That's my review. To further explain, I might add that I love the 1930's. No, not for the National Socialists, and the concentration camps, and the despair of the Great Depression. Rather for cool stuff like the golden age of radio, great building projects such as the Golden Gate Bridge and the Empire State Building, and streamlined locomotive trains. Oh, yeah, and the romance of Prohibition and the Gangsters and the FBI and all that... So I gets this e-mail from David Patrone, a crooner who might think of himself as being most comfortable in the 1950's, but who would also fit quite well in the 1930's. Patrone says he's gonna be at this "speakeasy" downtown in the Gaslamp, a place called Prohibition SD. A little investigation through my contacts on the street, and I was able to get the exact location (which, out of necessity, differs from the false address above -- it ain't exactly 560 Fifth) and more importantly, the password to gain entry to this underground juice joint. Why don't I just give the password and location here? Well, you might be a G-man, so no way am I saying anything. Suffice to say, you can contact Vinnie through the website, and after about 24 hours, time enough for a background check, you might be provided with the the current password. So last Friday, I combed some Murray's Pomade through my hair with difficulty (jeepers you need lots of hot water to slick yer hair back with that stuff, and then it stays in forever), jumped in a suit and tie and threw on my best lid, a grey felt fedora. With my date and a couple friends, we motored downtown to the Gaslamp. The place was classy without being too swanky. For what was formerly a morgue, they dressed the place up real nice, with wood paneling, movie star photographs, and dim red lighting. Patrone and his band were in top form. The drinks went down smooth, and the wallet survived surgery and is recovering quite well. To repeat my review: Yes.

Blind Lady Ale House

BLAH is cool, kind of noisy, and of the 5 beers I tried so far (two visits, including sipping friends) I really liked 2 of them. Which is cool, it's all about personal taste, right? I think they got about 20 choices there. A comment to stringer steve: I've actually read your "Guinness Theory" http://steveterry.livejournal.com/13050.html and man I respectfully tell you that you are "full of Guinness" if you know what I mean. I like Guinness. A lot.
