Hong Kong Restaurant

The food at this restaurant is just awful. I've read the reviews on this and other sites that state that this place serves "good," or "no frills" or "basic" chinese food and I really don't know what restaurant these people were eating in. It seems to me it couldn't possibly be the same place. Things started out OK -- a cup of wonton soup that had a nice, rich, slightly fatty broth, some slices of roast pork , and couple of half decent pork wontons in it. Everything went precipitously downhill from there. First the spring roll appetizer. I cringe now just thinking of how I was so hungry that I ate two of these "spring rolls" notwithstanding that I knew they would be terrible the moment they showed up on the table. ...These rolls of deep fried rice pancake were stuffed with some sort of meat-like substance that was terribly disturbing in its texture, color, and mystery flavor. I gave up on these items promptly... Then came the entrees. First the fish with black bean sauce entree. At $12.95, it consisteed of a fried breaded fish filet...that had the flavor and consistency of wet cardboard. No whole freshly cooked fish on a platter with head and tail nestled in an appetizing sauce the way that this dish is served at every decent chinese restaurant. at this place the dish consists of this unpleasant deep fried and breaded fish filet and to make matters worse it was smothered in an oily salty-sweet highly thickened brown sludge sauce that I could feel simultaneously raising my blood pressure and creating substantial trans-fat deposits throughout my corpus. The big splash of color and apparent effort to include an ostensibly healthy ingredient in this dish was the three-quarters of a pound of half-cooked sliced green pepper that was thrown in to the mix and that had the unpleasing texture and flavor that one would expect out of three-quarters of a pound of half-cooked sliced green pepper. The Pork with Hyung Sai sauce entree was equally horrific. It consisted of overcooked pork with the same oily, high sodium, sickeningly sweet, brown sludge sauce that fish with black bean sauce had been smothered in. And not to be outdone, it had the same walloping helping of half-cooked sliced green pepper thrown in it. Three to four bites of each of these awful entrees was all I could muster. They were really nothing short of disastrous. I am not difficult to please. I am not fussy about food. My mom was a restauranteur for 40 years in New York and I know good food but I'm not a snob. This place is just plain terrible. Avoid it.
