Why break bread in the City of Angels? Wade into a mixology oasis, devour seared red meat and make your way through a parade of Asian delights? Eat, pray and love. Nah, I just love and eat.

For our first stop on this food tour, we freefall into a dive called Freddy Small’s in L.A. We ogle a fluffy bed of herb mashed potatoes, and begin to drool as we peep this fresh-seared, medium-rare prime rib drizzled in bone marrow gravy. Kinky.

With our pikos (the Hawaiian word for bellybutton) popping, we bid farewell to Pico Boulevard and make our way over to Beverly Hills for round dos.

First course at Red Medicine: oven-fried turnips with goat cheese garnished with bitter flowers and herbs.

On Wilshire, surrounded by vases of flowery plants, we eye the spring’s foraging menu at Red Medicine. A chill atmosphere greets us in the way of downtempo electronic music and wooden interior. Before our expedition sucks us deeper, we refresh our palates with minty pineapple mojitos and fragrant red hibiscus Long Islands in mason jars.

Our first course: oven fried turnips glazed in a braised sauce, heavily garnished in foliage, bitter flowers, lightly biting leafy greens and goat cheese dollops. Delectable. Main course: pork belly brisket served with butter lettuce hand wrappers, Vietnamese-style pickled radish and carrots, and a fish sauce to fly for! Dessert: Redwood Fire, a frozen disc of cinnamon cherry reduction dusted with a yogurt shaving and garnished with a generous sprig of mint, all afloat a sensuous citrus sorbet. So good!

To finish off our exploration, we find ourselves sloughing off our wallets for some afterpiece pork belly at Oi Asian Fusion at its new location in Canoga Park. Fried Asian-style rice with green onions, soft-boiled eggs and pork belly fried to crunch-sation. Followed by Chinese Peking pork sandwiches garnished with green onion curls and fresh-julienned cucumber slivers.

All in all, angels eat well in the culinary jungle that is L.A.
