The fair's roasted-over-the-spit turkey leg wrapped in ten thick slices of bacon is sure to be a hit.

A preview of this year's San Diego County Fair in Del Mar was hosted Friday night, June 1, along the midway of the fairgrounds. The exclusive invitee list included hundreds of local members of the TV, radio, print, and online media.

I introduced myself to who I thought was Channel 8's Kyle Kraska and talked with him for some time about a mutual friend that he would have known, only to find out I was talking to Graham Ledger, formerly of Channel 8. Ledger had played along as to not embarrass me. I was embarrassed, anyway.

Standing in line for free fair food, I had a nice conversation with KOGO's Chip Franklin and KGTV's Sky10 reporter Phil Konstantin. I watched others stare at the news babes: from KUSI,  Bridget Naso, Kerri Lane, and Leslie Lopez; San Diego 6's Heather Myers and Kristen Mosteller; and FOX 5's Heather Ford. The women reporters are all much taller in person than one would notice while watching them on TV. But I wasn't staring — really.

Guests got to ride on a monster truck, bungee-jump (not this guest), play skee ball and with water cannons, watch a dog frisbee show, and see animals exhibited by teens in 4H. Science-fiction characters based on this year's fair theme, “Out of This World,” strolled around the crowd. Three stages featured acts that will be performing at the fair, including a gospel choir, DJs, a ska band, and a magician.

All along the midway, the food booths were open and guests could sample everything from roasted corn on the cob to hot cinnamon rolls. The longest line for the free food was at Chicken Charlie's, well known to connoisseurs for their deep-fried everything, from Hostess Twinkies to frog legs.

Fair-food fanatics can look forward to two new food booths: a boiled-lobster booth, with Maine lobsters cooked live in two huge cooper pots, and a booth that sells only bacon-wrapped items. (I tried the portobello mushrooms wrapped in bacon — yum!)

The roasted-over-the-spit turkey leg wrapped in ten thick slices of bacon is sure to be a hit. A new drink will debut at the longtime pink Gingerbread House booth: Harry Potter's Butter Beer, a butterscotch-flavored cream soda.

The fair opens to the public on Friday, June 8 and continues until July 4 (closed on Mondays except July 2.)
