Double Pane Problem

Forty year San Marcos resident Helen Cortez appeared in front of the city council on June 22 to comment on the increased noise from Sunset Park, which is directly across from her home.

Cortez described the park as beautiful and said she considers it a great addition to the neighborhood; however, she said that daily games at the park’s indoor-soccer field have disrupted the tranquility. According to Cortez, noise from the soccer games can be heard as late as 9:15 p.m.

“The noise level that we experienced at our home has become unbearable,” said Cortez. With an additional outdoor soccer field planned, she expressed concern about even more noise.

“I don’t have double-pane windows, and I don’t have air conditioning…. When summer gets here, I am going to have to open my windows. I will be subject to whatever [noise] is out there seven days a week.”

Cortez requested that the City consider relocating the games to nearby Bradley Park on Linda Vista Drive, where homes are located farther away from the fields.

During the meeting, city staff reported that at least six other homes are impacted by the noise generated at the soccer field. Staff also said that moving the games to Bradley Park is unlikely since they are already “booked up.” Among alternatives being considered to help the neighborhood are paying for double-pane windows and air conditioning.
