KFMB Channel 8 Blood Drive in Kearny Mesa

— On Friday, January 23, 2009 from 11:00 a.m. through 6:30 p.m., San Diego residents waited in the parking lot of the Kearny Mesa Walmart to help replenish the dwindling supply of blood at the San Diego Blood Bank.

760KFMB/Jack-FM worked in conjunction with the blood bank to host the event. Their motto was plain and simple: GIVE BLOOD...GIVE LIFE! The donors were able to replenish their blood-sugar levels with grilled filet mignon burritos provided courtesy of Donovan’s Steak & Chop House.

As she recovered in the blood bank bus, donor Kimberly St. John said she has given blood every eight weeks since she was a young girl, a compassionate act inspired by her father. Nicole Johnson, a first-time donor, said that her motivation was “It’s time for a change, time to give back, you know, the whole New Year’s theme.” Donors must first undergo a finger prick test to determine their iron levels and also complete an in-depth questionnaire about their health and sexual history.

By 4:40 p.m., 200 San Diegans had given the “gift of life.” For more information about how you too can donate, visit the Blood Bank’s website at www.sandiegobloodbank.org.
